How Fermann pods are built
A Fermann pod is an aluminium frame clad in 38 mm double-layer honeycomb panels and tempered sound-insulation glass, lined inside with PET acoustic panels and carpeted. Silenced fans, LED lighting and power are built in, and the parts assemble with few fasteners so the pod can be moved.
Structure
The frame uses aerospace-grade aluminium profiles. Walls are 38 mm double-layer aluminium honeycomb panels with high-density damping felt bonded to the metal to stop sound passing through.
Glass
Tempered sound-insulation glass of the type used in high-speed rail carriages. It meets both acoustic and safety requirements.
Interior acoustics
PET (polyester) acoustic panels on the walls and ceiling absorb sound inside, giving a reverberation time of about 0.25 seconds so voices sound clear rather than boxy.
Floor
A single custom-cut nylon carpet sits embedded in the base, keeping the floor level and non-slip while absorbing footfall noise.
Ventilation
Two fans run through baffled ducts that block sound escaping through the vents. Together they replace the air about every 2 minutes.
Light and power
4000 K LED lighting at around 150 lux, a 12 V USB supply, and a mains input rated 100–240 V at 50/60 Hz. Three switches control the light and each fan.
Inside the construction

Installation
Panels arrive flat-packed and are assembled on site. Acoustic panels attach with hook-and-loop fastening that meets the EU RoHS standard and is free of odour, so they can be removed and refitted many times.
Because the pod is assembled rather than built, it can be dismantled and reassembled in a new location when the office moves.
What we need on site
- A clear route for the panels from the lift to the pod position
- A level floor
- A standard power socket close to the pod
- Office air-conditioning reaching the pod location
